Since 2006 when the last inmate left the former Horsens State Penitentiary, intense work and effort have been invested and in 2012 the project became a reality: FÆNGSLET (THE PRISON).
Today the historic buildings of the former state penitentiary houses FÆNGSLET, the cultural institution that encompasses The Prison Museum, the city’s tourist information center VISITHORSENS, the prison hostel SleepIn Fængslet, business events, festivals, concerts, the shared office space FÆNGSLET 2. EAST and much more.
In the heart of FÆNGSLET stands The Prison Museum where the Museum of Horsens has created a unique experience of the life behind walls through sound, film, photos and belongings – ideally situated within the authentic surroundings of the old penitentiary.
The former prison yard where inmates used to enjoy fresh air and exercise is today a concert arena. Outdoor concerts and event of any taste can be enjoyed here throughout the summer semester.
Some of the facilities of the old penitentiary – the prison workshops, the gathering hall, the gym – are now available for rental by those who are looking for a very distinct framing of their event – whether it´s meetings, conferences or parties.
Additional rooms are leased to artist groups and other organizations who wish to make use of FÆNGSLET on weekdays and weekends.
In the Prison Shop which is also home to the city’s tourist information there’s exciting merchandise to be found, coffee, crime fiction and several products made by inmates in Tønder Jail well as brochures and guides to the local attractions surrounding Horsens.
In the old 2. EAST cell block is a shared office space inviting the city’s businesses, cultural and educational institutions to lease and participate in creating an inspiring and highly innovative environment for everyone.
Fængslet SleepIn is an unforgettable overnight stay with plenty of food for thought.
Fængslet SleepIn is a hostel situated in the sick ward of the former penitentiary.
The prison premises that are so characteristic to FÆNGSLET are known to many – from the movie productions of “Hvidstengruppen” and “R”, the MTB race Prison Break, and the art workshops and galleries within the prison walls to annual events like the European Medieval Festival, the Crime Fiction Festival and much more.
